Meet a Lerner: Elizabeth Horab

Meet Elizabeth Horab, Executive Assistant to the CEO!

If you wrote a book, what would your author bio be?

Elizabeth Horab is an author and playwright living in the Midwest. She’s best known for writing biographical and autobiographical work that examines the intricacies of being human.

What brings you to Lerner?

After moving to the Twin Cities two years ago and landing in special education, I began looking to make a career change. I wanted to work with a company that had a lot of heart, and was full of good people. I couldn’t be happier with my position at Lerner.

In the past I’ve worked in special education (school settings, residential treatment centers, out-patient and in-patient mental health hospitals); in theater (teaching grades kindergarten through university); administrative work for various companies and artists; radio work (which I still do part-time); website design; and taxes.

What were your favorite books as a kid? What are some favorite books you’ve read recently?

I read all the original Nancy Drew books (1-100) when I was in grade school–this was a huge accomplishment for me and one I’m still proud of. Shel Silverstein was a poet that I loved. And, of course, I can’t forget to mention the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series.

Recently I read Nayyirah Waheed’s salt., which is one of my new favorite books of poetry. I’m currently reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.

Say you’re trapped on a desert island–what 5 books would you want with you?

What are your hobbies besides reading?

I write and direct plays in my free time. You may also find me crocheting (blankets, hats, scarves, fingerless gloves) when I’m at home relaxing. I do website design, associate producing, and occasionally co-host with AM950’s Connections Radio on Saturday mornings. I also practice meditation, mindfulness, and contemplative somatics (dance and movement).

Thanks, Elizabeth!
