Grow Early Literacy with Pull Ahead and Early Bird Readers

by Jenny Krueger, Publishing Director, School/Library

Lerner Publications is gearing up for our Fall 2019 books—our biggest list ever!—to hit the market.

This season we have two exciting early literacy offerings: Our new Pull Ahead Readers and an addition to our popular Early Bird Readers. Both programs are perfect for use in classrooms, guided reading groups, and in libraries.

Pull Ahead Readers

Pull Ahead Readers is launching with 44 titles of paired fiction and nonfiction. For example, the Fall Leaves nonfiction title introduces how leaves change color in fall, while the paired story Fall Colors follows a character named Sam as he notices red apples, yellow leaves, and orange pumpkins. Nonfiction titles are illustrated with colorful photos, and the fiction titles showcase charming illustrations. Both photos and illustrations are carefully matched to text to aid comprehension.

Pull Ahead readers are instructionally leveled by certified literacy specialists to fall within a GRL range of A-D. Consistent placement of text, repeated words and phrases, and lots of sight words help readers understand the text. Picture glossaries extend the learning, in addition to point-of-use teaching guides (see links at the end of this post) in the softcovers and standalone teaching guides offered through our classroom division, Brain Hive. The standalone teaching guides are offered through Brain Hive’s PDIL (Print + Digital Integrated Lessons) platform.

Early Bird Readers

In addition to our Pull Ahead Reader launch, we have 10 new titles in our Early Bird Readers series. This system of leveled readers offer fun stories, inviting art, and hilarious titles to delight readers as they progress in level. Each title contains a GRL correlation chart in the back that matches each level to a GRL range. These additions to the green, orange, and purple levels correlate to a GRL range of G-K. With fun titles like Not Without My Whale and I Wish I’d Been Born a Unicorn, Early Bird Readers add plenty of whimsy to the process of learning to read.

We’re excited to launch Pull Ahead Readers and to continue our Early Bird Readers as Lerner Publications continues to add new resources to give new and learning readers memorable experiences with books in the classroom, in the library, and beyond.
