Martin Luther King Day 2016

We at Lerner Publishing Group celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this day. We recognize that his spirit lives on in the work to which so many Americans of the twenty-first century commit themselves, striving for a fairer, more just and peaceful life for all. It is a good day to take stock of where we have come in the years since his assassination and to look at the work that still lies ahead. In a recent four-part interview at GOVERNINGWorks with Ari Berman, senior contributing writer for The Nation and author of Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America (Farrar, Straus and Giroux (2015), legal scholar Fabrizio di Piazza discusses with Berman the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and what voting rights in America look like in the year 2016 and beyond. Note: GOVERNINGWorks is a free electronic commonplace book, edited by my brother, Fabrizio di Piazza, JD, MA, BA. It offers a wide range of thought-provoking material, inclusive of imagery, original documents, and video interviews, that explores how the ideals of democratic self-government work in political life.
