One of my favorite pleasures of summertime is perusing local produce at food co-ops, farmers’ markets, and the pop-up fruit-and-veggie stands that are ubiquitous at this time of year. There are baskets of fragrantly sweet, seed-bespeckled strawberries. Bundles of buttery, crispy-soft spinach leaves. Piles of simultaneously fresh, earthy, and savory-smelling tomatoes.
