STEM Innovations and Design

Production Editor Erica Johnson joins us today to talk about one of our new STEM titles:

Look at this photo. Do you know what this object is?

Now look at this one. I’m betting you all recognize it.

The first photo shows the Nest Learning Thermostat, a thermostat that can program itself. It has motion sensors to determine when a person is in the building and it can learn what temperature you prefer at different times of day.

The second photo is an early generation iPod. The iPod started as a top secret project at Apple. The first generation model was released in October 2001.

Both of these electronics were developed by Tony Fadell. You can read all about Fadell’s early life, his work designing iPod models, and his vision of a smart thermostat in the book iPod and Electronics Visionary Tony Fadell. This book is part of our STEM Trailblazer Bios series, which highlight outstanding individuals in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. They are the perfect books to inspire a budding engineer and entrepreneur.
