So I have this crazy obsession with reading. Granted, that’s probably not unusual for an editor. But when I say obsession, I do mean obsession. As in, I read the packaging my socks come in. I read the “News that Travels” bulletins my bus driver hands out on my commute to work (and I read them from cover to cover). I even occasionally read junk mail.
All this reading has led me to discover some clever writing in unusual places. Take this copy from a bottle of glass cleaner that’s underneath my kitchen sink:
Some advice if you live in a glass house: the neighbors see everything. Keep your digs in mint-smelling condition. Ammonia free and spotless with a non-toxic biodegradable cleaner that keeps those panes in the glass looking good. P.S. Don’t throw stones. To use: Spray. Wipe. Admire.
Are there any other obsessive readers out there? Have you discovered any good writing in an unlikely place? Do share. I’d like to think I’m not the only one whose morning isn’t complete until I’ve read the writing on my Cheerios box.
