Away at Cartoon College

This weekend I traveled by train to Vermont and paid a visit to The Center for Cartoon Studies. If you haven’t heard of CCS, let me fill you in. It’s a small college (about 50 students tops) nestled in a small village (White River Junction). It’s a nurturing environment where emerging cartoonists spend a year or two living and breathing comics. Their faculty is superb, and their visiting faculty includes some of the best cartoonists on this planet (Chris Ware, Lynda, Barry, Charles Burns, Alison Bechdel and many more). If I sound biased, I am–prior to moving to New York City, I spent five years at CCS as the Program Coordinator and a faculty member.

Here I am, with the class of 2009. I’m the one in the lower left (with the mustache).
CCS is like a second home to me, and I visit whenever I get a chance. On my most recent trip I lectured on comics for the emerging reader, middle grade and young adult market. Naturally, Graphic Universe was a large part of my presentation. Freshman student Adrienne Nunez was kind enough to take a few photos.

It was a lot of fun to catch up with old friends and meet new students. Be sure to keep an eye on the comics that are coming out of this school!
