Color Me Happy

I feel fortunate every day to work in children’s publishing. One of the many things I enjoy about my job is doing pre-publication reviews of the books in our Colors Everywhere series (part of Lerner’s Lightning Bolt Books brand). Why do I so enjoy reviewing this series? It’s because I love the product! I could probably go on forever about why I love it, but here’s a quick rundown:

• The texts cover a topic that’s both curricular and high interest—a winning combination for primary-grades titles.

• The photographic illustrations are inviting and relatable. Many of them show familiar scenes and feature everyday kids (see Red1 interior spread from Red Everywhere, right).

• The text is spare yet content rich. For that reason, working on books like these is not unlike editing poetry.

•The final chapter in these titles is a story about a child who loves the given color (e.g., “Becky Loves Blue”). This chapter engages readers by taking them into the life of a kid around their age and pointing out all the blue (or red, or yellow, or what have you) objects in the kid’s life.

• Many of the books include a chapter that explains sayings related to the color (e.g., seeing red, seeing the world through rose-colored glasses). This chapter calls out interesting information about the color and introduces readers to figurative speech.

• The cover design is fabulous! Check out that fun paint-chip motif (left).

I’m sure we’ll have plenty more to say about Lightning Bolt and other Lerner-imprint books in future posts. Stay tuned!
