Here are 10 things I didn’t know about 2Pac before editing his USA Today Lifeline Biography, which will be available shortly.

1. Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971.

2. Tupac Amaru, originally the name of an Incan leader, roughly translates to “shining serpent.”

3. At age 12, Tupac acted in a production of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem.

4. He attended high school with Jada Pinkett (now Jada Pinkett-Smith) at the Baltimore School for the Arts.

5. Among Tupac’s favorite musical artists at this time were Kate Bush and Sinead O’Connor.

6. In 1991, Vice President Dan Quayle asked Interscope Records to pull Tupac’s debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, from record store shelves, because he was concerned about the danger it posed to American family values.

7. In 1995, Tupac became the first musician to have an album chart at number one while in prison.

8. According to the late Notorious B.I.G., Tupac once wrote two full raps in the time it took him to leave for and return from a visit to the restroom.

9. Only months before Tupac’s death in 1996, he filmed a music video for the song “I Ain’t Mad at Cha,” which saw him dying, rising to heaven, and meeting music legends such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Marvin Gaye.

10. The Tupac’s-not-dead rumor that gained traction throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s was encouraged by none other than hip-hop luminary Chuck D of Public Enemy, who provided fans with eighteen reasons why he believed Shakur was still alive.
